Police probe brake failure claim in fatal Bukit Kajang toll crash

Driver claims brake failure before accident that killed toddler, but police say full inspection will determine cause

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysian police are investigating whether brake problems were behind a fatal crash at the Bukit Kajang Toll Plaza that killed a one-year-old boy and injured seven others.

Kajang district police chief ACP Naazron Abdul Yusof said the lorry involved was last serviced in April, but a full inspection will be carried out to verify the driver’s claim that the brakes had failed.

“The driver claimed he jumped out of the vehicle due to brake problems. However, investigations are ongoing to determine whether the vehicle really had brake problems. The lorry will be sent for inspection,” Naazron said in a statement today.

The driver has been remanded for two days to assist police, while statements have also been taken from five people, including the lorry company owner.

The crash occurred at around 10.50am on Saturday and involved a lorry, a car and two sport utility vehicles (SUVs). The toddler, who was in the car with his mother, grandmother and twin sibling, died in the accident.

Naazron said the child’s relatives have since been discharged from Serdang Hospital after treatment, while other victims from the SUVs are still warded at Kajang Hospital and a private hospital nearby.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. — September 28, 2025
