‘Silence is complicity’: Malaysian badminton fans urge athletes to speak up on Gaza

The pressure is mounting on Malaysian athletes to use their social media platforms for more than sport, as fans demand they speak out on the suffering in Gaza and criticise BAM’s quiet stance

KUALA LUMPUR — As global outrage over the Gaza conflict intensifies, Malaysian sports fans — particularly those from the badminton community — are calling on their favourite athletes to take a stand and use their platforms to speak up for the Palestinian people.

Drawing comparisons to Formula One star Lewis Hamilton, who has used his social media channels to highlight the recent humanitarian crisis, local fans are questioning why Malaysia’s athletes have remained silent.

Some have even gone as far as tagging the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), urging the national body to encourage its players to raise awareness.

Earlier this week, X user @elynsoh wrote: “The fact that Lewis, who is popular around the world, has spoken up, but none from our athletes. I might get cancelled.”

The post, which garnered more than 300,000 views and 85 quote reposts, sparked widespread discussion online.

Another user, @mikasatolo, replied: “Thank you for voicing this out! BL (Badminton Lovers) pressure the timelines. Get them (athletes) to speak up at least once. Put pressure. We love our athletes but dislike ignorant people. This is a worldwide issue. BAM, get them to speak up!”

User @kaisgrapejuice echoed similar sentiments, posting: “Silence is complicity and a silent agreement with oppressors. It really sucks that they are choosing to do this.”

The online debate has split opinion — while some fans believe athletes have a moral duty to use their influence for humanitarian causes, a small number argue that sports figures should not be compelled to comment on political issues, especially those beyond their expertise or control.

This social media movement came shortly before 23 Malaysian volunteers detained by Israeli forces during the Global Summit Flotilla (GSF) humanitarian mission to Gaza returned home safely.

In a separate development, United States president Donald Trump confirmed that Israel and Hamas have reached the first phase of a peace deal, potentially paving the way for a ceasefire after years of violence and suffering.

While Malaysian athletes have yet to make public statements, the mounting pressure highlights the growing expectation for sports personalities — once seen as apolitical — to use their voices in moments of global crisis.

Whether they choose to speak or stay silent, the conversation has underscored one reality: in today’s hyper-connected world, neutrality is increasingly seen as a stance of its own. – October 9, 2025
