‘Daddy never expected so many people to contribute’: Nooryana Najwa

Najib’s daughter says family respects pardon conditions requiring RM50 million fine payment before house arrest process can proceed

KUALA LUMPUR — Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was deeply touched after seeing the number of people willing to contribute towards raising the RM50 million fine imposed as part of his conditional pardon.

His daughter, Nooryana Najwa, said Najib expressed his surprise when she and other family members visited him yesterday.

“Daddy really did not expect so many people to be willing to contribute. I would never force it on anyone,” she said in a Facebook post today.

Nooryana said many people had asked whether Najib had returned home, adding that the questions reflected their care and concern for her father.

“For now, no. The Pardons Board’s decision stipulates that the house arrest is subject to the payment of the RM50 million fine first. Our family fully respects the decision,” she said.

She said if the RM50 million was successfully raised through voluntary contributions under the Datuk Seri Najib Solidarity Fund, all payment arrangements and subsequent procedures would be handled through official channels.

“Yana understands that the fine must first be paid to the court. The court will then issue a payment receipt, and that receipt will be submitted to the prison authorities. Only then can the prison issue a ‘release order’ for the house arrest process,” she said.

Nooryana said the family was grateful for Umno’s efforts in spearheading the solidarity fund, while emphasising that contributions were entirely voluntary.

“Our family is deeply touched by Umno’s efforts in leading this Solidarity Fund. DSN never wanted to burden the party or the people. Every contribution is entirely voluntary and based on each person’s ability — there is no pressure or obligation for anyone to contribute,” she said.

On Friday, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim granted Najib a conditional pardon, allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028.

The Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) of the Prime Minister’s Department said the conditional pardon was decided during the 64th meeting of the Federal Territories Pardons Board for Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya at Istana Negara.

The pardon is subject to the payment of the RM50 million fine and compliance with conditions set by the board.

Earlier, Najib’s lawyers from Messrs Shafee & Co. said he would remain at Kajang Prison as his ability to pay the fine was beyond his control.

The legal firm said a substantial portion of Najib’s assets, bank accounts and properties remained subject to freezing orders and enforcement proceedings by the government, and their disposal was not currently under his sole control.

The lawyers said this meant Najib’s ability to fulfil the condition depended partly on matters outside his control.

“Meanwhile, and until the fine is paid to the court, our client remains at Kajang Prison. Our client and the legal team are currently examining the conditions and their practical implications,” they said.

As of Saturday, Umno had collected RM1 million through the Najib Solidarity Fund. – September 20, 2026
