MACC probes RM42 million solar scandal at UiTM Holdings

Graft busters target unauthorized payments and severe governance failures at the university’s investment arm following Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's call for major reforms

KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has launched an investigation into heavy financial losses suffered by UiTM Holdings Sdn Bhd, centering on a suspicious RM42 million payment tied to a solar energy project in Pahang.

The investigation focuses on a 50-megawatt solar project in Gambang, where RM42 million was allegedly disbursed without the approval of the Board of Directors for purposes completely unrelated to the project.

MACC Chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Abd Halim Aman confirmed the probe is being carried out under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009, which addresses abuse of power for gratification.

He assured that investigators will move swiftly, independently, and fairly to complete the file.

“MACC emphasizes that the investigation is still ongoing due to the complexity of the case, which involves technical aspects, and pending further instructions from the prosecution,” the agency said in a statement on Sunday.

The graft busters added that they will also examine underlying governance breakdowns within the investment arm of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), welcoming Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s firm stance on addressing structural weaknesses in Bumiputera agencies.

Speaking a day earlier, Anwar called for a comprehensive overhaul of UiTM Holdings’ governance and management structures following its 2023 financial losses.

The Prime Minister warned that while routine management failures warrant operational reforms or staff replacements, any proven criminal wrongdoing will face stern legal action. – September 27, 2026
