Lee Chean Chung skipped PKR meetings, congress for about a year: Anwar

Prime Minister says former Petaling Jaya MP’s departure will not affect development projects in the constituency

KUALA LUMPUR – Former PKR member Lee Chean Chung had largely been absent from the party’s activities for about a year before his resignation, said party president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The prime minister said Lee had not attended party meetings or congresses during that period, adding that his departure should therefore not be regarded as an issue, Bernama reported.

“So, it is only appropriate. If he is no longer interested, there is no issue. He can leave on good terms. Thank you for his contributions over the years.

“He hasn’t been involved in party affairs for about a year, hasn’t attended any party meetings and didn’t attend the congress either. So, there is no issue,” he told reporters after inspecting the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) quarters in Sungai Besi here today.

Lee, who resigned as the Petaling Jaya MP with immediate effect, had earlier claimed that allocations for the constituency had been withheld.

Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said the government would continue to ensure that development projects were carried out, including those involving schools, surau, mosques, temples and roads.

He also said Lee’s resignation would not disrupt ongoing or planned development projects in Petaling Jaya.

“He is entitled to his views and we can accept them. But it is not true that development projects will come to a halt when an MP steps down,” he added.

On whether legal action could be taken against Lee, Anwar said the matter had been referred to PKR secretary-general Datuk Fuziah Salleh and the party’s Legal Committee, which includes Sivarasa Rasiah.

Earlier, Lee announced his resignation as the Petaling Jaya MP with immediate effect following PKR’s decision to suspend his membership for three years.

He said he decided to leave the party after receiving the suspension letter on September 30. – October 2, 2026
