KUALA LUMPUR – Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Dr Johari Abdul has officially received the unconditional resignation letter from Petaling Jaya Member of Parliament Lee Chean Chung on October 2, the august House was informed today.

Deputy Speaker Datuk Seri Dr Ramli Mohd Nor announced the development at the commencement of the Third Meeting of the Fifth Session of the 15th Parliament this morning.

“The Dewan Rakyat Speaker has informed the Election Commission of the vacancy in the parliamentary seat, in accordance with Article 54(1) of the Federal Constitution,” he said.

Lee’s sudden departure from his parliamentary post follows his three-year membership suspension by PKR’s political bureau. Explaining his decision, the 18-year party veteran stated he refused to “sit quietly like a log” while drawing a parliamentary salary, opting instead to vacate the seat.

However, his move drew sharp criticism from PKR Political Bureau Ex-Officio member Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, who publicly questioned why Lee surrendered his public mandate over internal party friction, especially with crucial debates on Budget 2027 commencing this week.

Meanwhile, in a separate development on parliamentary reforms, Ramli announced that the long-awaited Parliamentary Service Council will be established to manage legislative administrative affairs.

The setup follows the official enforcement of the Parliamentary Service Act 2025 on October 1. – October 5, 2026
