KUALA LUMPUR – Mixed doubles player Toh Ee Wei is deeply grateful to the medical team at the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) for their efforts and support in expediting her recovery after she injured her left arm in September.

After nearly six weeks away from competitive action, Ee Wei is set to return to the court alongside her partner, Chen Tang Jie, at the upcoming Kumamoto Masters in Japan next week.

Last week, she began to regain her competitive edge when invited to participate in a exhibition event in Jakarta, Indonesia, where she got a taste of playing in a tournament again.

Reflecting on the injury she sustained while training at the Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM) gym, Ee Wei explained that she required 16 stitches after slipping while holding a dumbbell, causing her to be struck by a shard of glass.

To make matters worse, she also suffered a grade 2 muscle tear in her back.

Despite the severity of the injury, Ee Wei is grateful for the swift recovery, crediting the BAM sports officers who supported her throughout the rehabilitation process.

“I didn’t think much about it after being admitted to the hospital. Just four days later, I was back in training. I focused on my recovery, and I’m quite happy with how it’s going so far.

“The most important part was the hard work of my physiotherapist and my coach’s trust in me.

“I’ve also had past experience with long periods of rest due to illness, so I understood the importance of taking it step by step and doing my best to recover,” said Ee Wei.

However, Ee Wei is not setting high expectations for the upcoming Kumamoto Masters, given that it has been a long time since her last competitive outing.

Additionally, her opponents in the first round will be the former world number one mixed doubles pair from Thailand, Dechapol Puavaranukroh, who is now partnering with Supissara Paewsampran.

“I think it has been more than a month since I participated in a tournament. I don’t know what will happen, but when I play, I will try to give my best.

“Nobody wants to lose, and we will fight for every single point in the next tournaments,” she added. – November 9, 2024
