Govt has settled RM42bil of 1MDB debt, total obligations exceed RM50bil: Anwar

Anwar reveals over RM9 billion in remaining debt, with government funds covering the shortfall

KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim confirmed that 1Malaysia Development Bhd’s (1MDB) debts remain unresolved, with total liabilities surpassing RM50 billion.

Anwar, who also serves as the Finance Minister, revealed that the government has already paid RM42 billion in principal and interest to address 1MDB’s debt obligations from 2018 to the present.

“The debt inherited from 1MDB since 2018 stands at RM34 billion in principal, with interest commitments of approximately RM17 billion,” he explained during the Prime Minister’s question time in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Expanding on the matter, Anwar clarified that only RM29 billion of the RM42 billion paid by the government had been covered by funds from 1MDB’s asset recovery.

“This demonstrates that asset recovery efforts have been insufficient to meet the full debt repayment commitments,” he added.

Anwar also pointed out that the remaining 1MDB debt obligations, totalling RM13 billion, would have to be covered using government funds.

“This represents a significant loss to the nation. The 1MDB debts have not been fully settled, and RM9 billion of outstanding debt remains,” he said in response to a question from Syahredzan Johan (PH-Bangi).

This includes RM5 billion in principal and RM4 billion in interest related to the Islamic medium-term sukuk notes, which are due until 2039. – December 2, 2025
