KUALA LUMPUR — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested a former director of a telecommunications company for allegedly offering a bribe of around RM8 million to the president of a prominent bank.

It is understood that the payment was allegedly made in exchange for the approval of a loan application.

According to sources, the suspect, a man in his 50s, was detained around 12:30pm yesterday at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya, where he was attending an interrogation session.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspect committed the alleged crime in 2012, involving a fraudulent loan application for approximately RM400 million intended for a fibre optic project.

The documents submitted for loan approval included a forged ‘Joint Completion Guarantee’, which was presented as part of the required conditions for the loan approval.

It is believed that the bribe was paid to influence the decision-making process, with the suspect acting in an effort to secure financial backing for the project.

Datuk Mohamad Zamri Zainul Abidin, Senior Director of the Special Operations Division (BOK) at MACC, confirmed the arrest and the ongoing investigation.

He said that the case is being investigated under Section 16(b)(A) of the SPRM Act 2009 and Section 471 of the Penal Code. The suspect is scheduled to be charged in the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court today. – February 23, 2026
