MCMC steps in after complaints of hacked and blocked WhatsApp accounts

Commission working with Meta to address user concerns and safeguard account access

KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating public complaints involving WhatsApp accounts that have allegedly been compromised, blocked, or become inaccessible.

In a statement on Friday, the regulator said it had referred the matter to Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, to seek clarification and request appropriate action.

“MCMC will continue to monitor the situation and seek cooperation from the platform to protect user interests.

“Affected users are advised to use official WhatsApp channels for account recovery or verification,” the statement read.

MCMC said account compromises and account blocking were separate issues, explaining that accounts taken over by irresponsible parties could later be blocked by the platform due to violations of WhatsApp’s terms of service.

“Accounts compromised by irresponsible parties can be misused for fraud, spam, or activities that violate WhatsApp’s terms, subsequently leading to the account being blocked by the platform,” MCMC said.

The commission advised users not to disclose verification codes or security PINs, and to enable WhatsApp’s Two-Step Verification feature as an added security measure.

Users were also reminded to avoid clicking on suspicious links or installing unverified applications, while exercising caution against individuals or services claiming they can recover accounts in exchange for payment, personal information, or verification codes.

“If the issue cannot be resolved through official WhatsApp channels, users may submit a complaint to MCMC for further action and for the case to be referred to Meta,” the commission added. – September 25, 2026
