KUALA LUMPUR – Former national hockey captain and coach Sarjit Singh died at 10pm yesterday at Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz UKM after battling health complications.

The Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC), in a statement issued at midnight, confirmed Sarjit’s death and paid tribute to his contributions to Malaysian hockey as a player and national head coach.

“His dedication, service, and contributions to Malaysian hockey – both as a player and as a head coach – will always be remembered,” MHC said.

The national governing body also extended its condolences to Sarjit’s family and loved ones, and wished them “strength, comfort, and peace” during the difficult time.

“May his soul rest in eternal peace,” MHC added.

Sarjit’s death comes weeks after he spoke to Scoop from his hospital bed about his health battle.

In the interview published last month, Sarjit said he had endured a difficult start to his hospitalisation but was recovering.

“The first few days were hell,” he said.

He also expressed his appreciation for the support he received from his family, friends and members of the hockey fraternity.

Regarded as one of the country’s finest national players, Sarjit contributed to Malaysian hockey both as a player and coach.

He represented Malaysia at the 1984 Los Angeles and 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games.

He was also part of the national side that won bronze medals at the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi and the 1990 edition in Beijing.

Sarjit first served as national coach from 2007 to 2008 before returning to the position in March 2024.

During his second stint, which ended in March this year, he guided the national team to fourth place at the World Cup Qualifier in Ismailia, Egypt, in March.

He also served in various coaching roles at national junior and domestic levels during his career.

Sarjit’s contribution to Malaysian hockey spanned several decades, from his playing days with the national team to his two spells as head coach. – August 24, 2026
